Teatime Stories from "All About Tea"

Silence

In a remote temple in the mountains of Japan, four Zen monks were on a retreat that demanded them to observe absolute silence. It was very cold, and when a draft of icy wind penetrated the temple, the youngest monk exclaimed:" The candle has gone off!"
"Why did you speak?" scolded the eldest monk. "We are on a silent retreat!"
"Why are you talking instead of keeping your mouth shut, like we are supposed to?!" shouted the third monk in indignation.
"I am the only one who hasn't said anything!" declared the fourth monk, greatly pleased with himself.
